After barely escaping Kimera and the Ice Prairies our heroes Janner, Kalmar (who has taken on a new form), Leeli, Podo, Nia and Oskar board a ship for the Green Hollows, Nia’s ancestorial home. With hopes of no longer being on the run from Gnag the Namless, finding some peace, and being rid of the Fangs of Dang they dream of a restful new home. However, their welcome in the Green Hallows is less than friendly. Also, there has been a sightings of a mysterious monster on the prowl around town that is killing livestock.

Reading Audience:

I would say anyone six years or older can really enjoy this one. Reading wise, I would guess middle school aged. We read this series out loud as a family and my nine and eleven year old loved them.

Stuff to be aware of:

Hopefully, you read the first two books in this series. This one could be a little bit more scary for younger children. There is the normal fighting scenes and deaths, but nothing battle wise is more intense than the first two books. A character is clawed and bitten by a fang. The words “cut your throat” is mentioned. A character cuts her hand with a knife and leaves a bloody hand print on a tree for symbolism. There is a scene with bones of dead animals in a cave and talk of hanging someone. Some animals are eaten by a monster. There are characters that are shot with arrows including a mishappen beast that is deformed looking. One character gets stabbed and shot multiple times before dying.

Overall:

Wow. I don’t think I have ever gasped out loud reading a book before. Peterson continues to weave a story that is clean, full of mystery and surprises, while also ting it to everything before and making you want to dive right into the fourth, final book. I love how each of the books in the series feels unique and different. This is one of my favorite series of all time. The Biblical applications from this series are so stupendous. I just can’t say enough about how good this series is.
