The Wingfeather Saga Book 2: North! or Be Eaten
Peet’s treehouse is safe until the Fang armies come searching for the famed Jewels of Anniera. There is one place the Fangs can’t go, and that is the Ice Prairies. With Gnag the Nameless’ army in hot pursuit our heroes must brave monsters in Glipwood Forest, smelly Trolls, the mighty waters of Fingap Falls, the Stranders of the East Bend, a evil fork factory, and savage Bomnubbles on their journey north. Maybe the legends of the Florid Sword are true and there really is a rebellion coming, but will they survive long enough to find out?
Reading Audience:
I would say anyone six years or older can really enjoy this one. Reading wise, I would guess middle school aged. We read this series out loud as a family and my nine and eleven year old loved them (as did the parents!).
Stuff to be aware of:
Hopefully, you read the first book in this series. This one is a little more intense and darker at times. There is the normal fighting scenes and deaths, but nothing battle wise is very intense. There is a death scene of a special character that was hard on my girls. There is a villian that carries a whip and whips children. There are homeless like people that take children. Characters are put into a coffin for punishment.
There is a group of people that are very mean and do not value “good” or “morality.” They carry lots of weapons and enjoy killing things and people. Children are sold to the Black Carriage. There are several deaths in the book (mostly bad guys). Some fall over a waterfall to their death. Some are killed by arrows. Some stabbed. The Fangs turn to dust when killed.
Overall:
I still remember the feeling I got watching Star Wars the first time as a child. The excitement of being taken to a land completely foreign to what I knew. The thrill of aliens, the magic of the force, learning that Vader was Luke’s father, the further twist of Leia being his sister. It was amazing. l loved it. I’ve not felt that way about any other world from any movie or book, until now. This series makes me feel that way again. I’ve only read the first two of four, but this is by far my favorite book series and my favorite fantasy setting. It’s clean and there isn’t anything bad in it. It can get dark, but there is nothing gruesome. It’s a book I look forward to reading and discussing with my children. I can’t recommend this series enough.
