Has your child started asking all the right questions about “where do babies come from?” My wife and I lived by the “only answer their questions with as little as info as possible” rule. This worked for a few years until our oldest started asking all the right questions. I wasn’t worried about talking to my kids about “sex,” but I did think it would be good to have some tools to help them grasp the concept. That is when I found this book. A book designed for children that explains sex.

Reading Audience:

The cover suggests that it can be used with kids four years old and up. I disagree with that from a psychological (concrete thinking) perspective. Each child is different and will need to have this topic discussed with them at different ages. Four in my opinion is too young. I would suggest this book for those searching for a tool to help teach a child about sex. If I needed to put an age to it I would say at least seven or eight.

Stuff to be aware of:

There are two lines that mention that some children have two fathers and some have two mothers, implying same sex attraction. There are also two illustrations, on a page with many, that could be interpreted as two same sex couples.

Other that that it is a book about sex so be prepared to see human anatomy. Also, there is also a photo of a woman and man on top of one another in a bed, they are under covers.

Overall:

This book is a good tool, like any tool you need to try it out before intended use. Always pre-read. It’s a very good scientific/biology reference tool. I have used this book with both of my girls. My wife and I had discussions with each of them about sex, answered any questions they had, and then used this book to further help them understand. It may be a little “cartoony” for some, but it is aimed at children. Yes, the sperm and eggs have faces. There is no Biblical perspective to this book, but it is very easy to discuss God’s design of sex as you read. The book is factual and gives the reader a lot of info, but it does not go over board in my opinion. I have suggested this book to several people. I did white out the same sex dialogue in mine. I am happy to discuss it with anyone further if you would like to contact me.
