Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli along with the people of the Green Hallows are preparing for a war with Gnag the Nameless. A war that will cost the the Wingfeathers, the Green Hallows and all of Aerwiar greatly. The Throne Warden, the King, and the Song Maiden each must take up their own fight, learning their strengths and weaknesses, and making new allies that will help them end Gnag’s terrible reign and restore the majesty of their home kingdom.

Reading Audience:

I would say anyone six years or older can really enjoy this one. Reading wise, I would guess middle school aged. We read this series out loud as a family and my nine and eleven year old loved them.

Stuff to be aware of:

The final book in the series focuses on an all out war. There a many people and dogs that fall in battle. Gnag, and several other beings/creatures are in this book that might be considered by some scary. Some are very deformed and there are some pictures in the book of some of these creatures. There are some dramatic, ad very sad deaths, but nothing is overly graphic. My children, my wife, and I did cry at different points in the story so be prepared. While there is a lot of happiness, there is also a lot of sadness.

Overall:

This book concludes the amazing story Andrew Peterson’s started. The allegory is so rich and will make you want to spend time thanking the “Maker” that He can redeem us, even in our most broken of state. This final book, and this series, is full of wit, adventure, humor, moral teachings, and the deep truth that family and doing the right thing is oh so important. This series will always sit on the bookshelf of my heart as one that helped my grow into a better person and will remain on my physical shelf as one of my all time favorites.
