Wingspan
About the Game:
As an ornithologist (person who studies birds) you want to attract the the best birds to nest in your preserve, which includes three different habitats. Each bird that you attract has special abilities that will effect your gameplay or their habitat in some way. The game is played in four rounds, each consisting of multiple turns. The object of the game is to use your birds and habitats to gain points by laying eggs, gather birds, and performing actions that some bird species have. Each round also has an objective that gives players bonus points. At the end of four rounds the player with the most points win.
This is an engine building game, which means gathering cards (with abilities) that over time improve your abilities, gain you resources, earn you points, or give you some type of benefit. Another example of this type of game is Splendor.
Replay Value:
This isn’t a game I would want to play back to back or multiple times in a week, but it is fun and definitely has good replay value alone or with friends. Due to time, I prefer playing with no more than three people.
My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this game the first time I played it. It will take a round or two to really grasp what all you can do with card combinations and there is a lot of strategy to how you use your turn and what order you do things in. If you are not into long games, or ones that have you building up a bunch of cards that keeps adding things to your game play, this may not be one for you. There is a relaxing aspect to it. The art work and birds are soothing and the competitiveness can’t really be felt during play because you don’t know how many points your opponents have. Throughout the game I just had the sense of trying to do the best I could with points and reaching objectives.
I enjoyed it and plan to play it more in the future!
