Rated PG-13

After traveling to Jotunheim to confront the Frost Giants, against his father’s wish, Thor is stripped of his powers and banished to Midgard (Earth). Thor’s powers are put into his hammer, Mjölnir, and only one who is worthy may lift it and if they lift it they receive the powers of Thor. Thor must mature and learn to put away his selfishness and vanity to regain his powers. However, S.H.I.E.L.D., the Frost Giants, and Loki all have different plans for Thor.

Language:

A*s - 1 D*mn - 2 Hell - 2 Religious Exclamations - 5

Stuff to be aware of:

Grossness - A large frost monster gets Thor’s hammer sent through his mouth and it kills it. It falls to the ground and a large hole can be seen in the back of it’s mouth and you can see through it.

Scary - During flashbacks and when the characters travel to Jotunheim Frost Giants fight the heroes. The Frost Giants look like a giant frozen dead-ish race. They are able to cover their hands and arms in ice to use as weapons. There is also a huge monster that kind of looks like the R from Star Wars but frozen looking.

Sexual - There are a few humorous flirty jokes. Thor is seen without a shirt on and two girls have a hard time not checking him out. One says, “he is cut for a homeless guy.”

Violence - In the first ten to fifteen minutes of the movie there are fight scenes in flashbacks and when the characters arrive on Jotunheim. These fight scenes involve Frost Giants (see the “scary” section above) which get stabbed, cut, and burn a character’s arm with ice. There is plenty of Marvel style fighting with the Warriors Three and others fighting Frost Giants and Thor fighting S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

Thor gets hit by a van and cracks the window and then he gets tazed. He later gets backed into by the same vehicle.

The final fight scene sees a small town destroyed by an Asgardian Destroyer. It shoots several characters, but doesn’t kill them. It slaps Thor leaving several bleeding scrapes on him. Thor seems to be dying, but doesn’t. Heimell chops off a Frost Giant’s head and stabs another, but this happens very quickly. Loki shoots a Frost Giant and it busts into ash.

Other - One character makes a joke about Thor being hammered. There is a comment about drinking and one scene involves Thor and Dr. Selvig drinking beer at the bar. Selvig passes out and when he wakes he is very drunk.

Overall: “Magic is just science we don’t understand yet.”

Seeing It With Your Family

Language wise, this one has less than the Iron Man movies, but the violence is about on par with them. This one might be scarier to younger viewers due to the Frost Giants, that I mention above. The fantasy themes make this one a bit different than the first few MCU movies.

What I Thought

Marvel took a hero that only comic book readers and lovers of Norse mythology knew about and made him a household name. The Warriors 3 and Lady Sif were perfect. Anthony Hopkins as Odin was epic. Tom Hiddleston is Loki (and continues to be). Chris Hemsworth is a great Thor, but better when the script isn’t super silly. This movie was a good intro for Thor into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
