Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse
Stream on Disney+
Runtime: 1 Hour 57 Minutes
Rated PG
Peter Parker has been Spider-man for ten years. He is a bit of a celebrity. Miles Morales just got bit by a radioactive spider. When the two meet, a journey to save the multiverse begins.
Themes:
Spider-man, the multiverse, loss, great power = great responsibility, school, family, parents, vigilantes, heroism, NYPD, familial love, trying vs not trying, intelligence, grafiti, uncles, fitting in, embarrassment, promises, mentoring, perseverance, grief, sacrifice, teamwork, learning, and never giving up.
Language:
Hell - 1 P*ss - 1
“Oh my gosh,” crap, and dang are all used. There is name calling such as fat, stupid, and dumb.
Stuff to be aware of: (I wrote this years after the movie came out, so spoilers below)
Scary - The spider that bites Miles is seen up close. In this universe Green Goblin is a huge flying monster with a long tongue.
Sexual - None of this is overly sexual, but are in this section. Miles’ uncle teaches him the, “shoulder touch.” This technique is putting your hand on a girl’s shoulder and saying, “hey.” Miles is seen sleeping in his boxers and he pulls his pants up over them. Miles mentions that he may have hit puberty. During one scene miles loses his shirt.
One character mentions, “seahorses mate for life.”
Violence - There is plenty of Spider-man fighting and violence. I’ll only mention the more intense things here. Spider-man and Goblin are killed in an explosion. Spider-man is seen under a pile of rubble. He talks to Miles before he dies. Kingpin smashes Spider-man and he dies and then tells the Prowler to kill Miles.
In a flashback, we see Kingpin’s wife and son hit by a truck. Kingpin is also seen with some blood dripping down his nose. Kingpin shoots Prowler in the back. There is no blood seen. Prowler talked to Miles before he dies.
Other - Gangs are mentioned. Miles and his uncle break into a place and tag it with spray paint.
Overall:
Seeing It With Your Family
With many superhero movies today being full of cursing and sexual jokes this is a nice family friendly alternative. There is some intense scenes and possible some scary characters, but this is one my ten year old loves.
What I Thought
If I had to rate all the Spider-man movies (original trilogy, Andrew Garfield movies, and the MCU trilogy) I would put Spider-Man No Way Home first and then Into the Spider-Verse would be a quick second. This movie was very well written and understands the story, characters, and humor of the Spider-man comics and universe. The voice actors all do an amazing job and the multiverse idea is handled well. But then on top of that, the art work looks like a comic book and moves so amazingly smooth. Coupled with a great soundtrack this one is a classic.
