Starting from single cell organisms see the history of where the minions came from unfold before your eyes. Throughout their history the minions have one glorious purpose: to serve and evil master. After centuries of accidently killing their evil masters the minions find themselves without a leader and in a state of depression. But do not fear, Kevin, Bob, and Stuart have decided to leave the group and find a new evil master to be henchmen for.

Themes:

Evolution, evil, henchmen, minions, conventions, England, the Queen, inventions, and right vs wrong.

Language:

The word heck is used once and there is some minor name calling in typical minion fashion.

Stuff to be aware of:

Evolution is taught at the beginning

Sexual - Some minions/characters are seen naked, but no private parts are seen. There is a march going on and signs read, “make love not war.” You see a sumo wreslter’s butt. There are some naked statues in one scene. One scene has a man dressed as a woman and he seems to like it (this is meant to be funny). Some guards dance and rip of their clothes and they are seen in their boxers. One minion is seen in a thong with his butt cheeks exposed.

Violence - There are many deaths in the beginning of the movie as the minions try their best to please their masters, but ultimately kill them. These are often humorous and not graphic. Some of these deaths include a t-rex falling in lava, a man getting eaten by a bear, and a vampire turning to dust in the sun light. An evil character snaps the neck of a doctor and the doctor crumples to the ground. Some minions are tortured and hung up, but it is discovered that minions can’t be hurt or killed.

Overall:

Taking Gru and his family out of the mix seems like a bad idea, but I guess kids really love the minions. There is plenty of “potty” humor hat is associated with the minions, which I mention above. I didn’t care for it as much as the original and even the sequels. I have noticed my own children only watched this one once, but have watched the Despicable Me movies multiple times. In my opinion minions are better with Gru, and its really not one in a minion….see what I did there?
