Goosebumps (2023) - Season 1

Stream on Disney + and Hulu

Episode: 10 Episodes (Around 38 - 48 minutes each)

Rated TV-14

I have only watched the first episode of this show. I may go back and finish it, but have not currently had time.

An accident that takes place in 1993 (when kids, like myself were reading the original books) takes key plots from several classic Goosebumps books weaving them into one episodic season of terror. Don’t say cheese and die!

Themes:

Goosebumps, LGBTQ+, horror, the past , photography, cheating, parties, crushes, scary legends, relationships, high school, forgiveness, possession, ghosts, and curses.

Language:

You’ll hear words like crap, sucks, porno, and two religious exclamations. Curse word count: d-mn twice, hello twice, and b-tch once.

Stuff to be aware of:

Sexual Things: One kid says, “no humping the air.” There is a boy is attracted to another boy, talking about wanting to ask him out, and talks about how he made out with him.

Physical Things: Kid skateboards off a roof and splits blood out of his mouth after a crash.

Scary Things: Split blood moves around and gets sucked through a keyhole. There is a ghost that looks human and bursts into flames and burns up. A character gets possesed.

Overall:

I enjoyed the humorous movie with Jack Black better. This one is darker than the movie, but does retain a little humor. This show seems to want to be “gateway horror.” It is just scary enough to be too much for kids, but not scary enough for teens and adults. IF I have the chance to go back and watch the rest I will update my article.
