Flora and Ulysses

Holy unanticipated occurrences!

You can purchase this movie on multiple platforms, but it is not longer available to stream on Disney+

Runtime: 1 Hour 35 Minutes

Rated PG

“Holy bagumba!”

A girl named Flora saves a squirrel from a vacuum cleaner. After his traumatic incident with the vacuum the squirrel, Ulysses, gains superpowers and helps bring Flora’s family together.

Themes:

Cynicism, hope, family, parents separating, what a hero is, and love.

Language:

I haven’t caught any curse words the few times we have watched it. One character does say “dang” and there is some name calling (one character mentions another is weird)

Stuff to be aware of:

Flora’s parents start out the movie separated and end up back together in the end. This could bring up questions from your children or give the wrong signal to some children going through similar situations. The family also breaks into an animal shelter, which is a bit shifty. The animal control guy shoots another person with some tranquilizer darts, this is done for laughs.

Overall:

In my opinion, this movie takes all the great lines, story beats, and eccentric characters from the book and makes them even better. The movie is slightly more family friendly. For example the mom’s smoking habit in the book is swapped for an obsession with cheetos in the movie. and the additional characters and story threads make sense and enhance the story. This is one we will be watching again!

OH, and the one liners are EPIC!
