The Sanderson Sisters, a trio of evil witches, have been dead for three hundred years awaiting a virgin to light the black flame candle on Halloween night and bring them back into the world of the living. Guess what? Halloween rolls around in the 90s and the candle gets lit. Can Max, his sister Dani, and friend Allison stop the trio of witches from taking the lives of children to keep themselves young and alive? They may just stand a chance if they can work together, use their wit, and accept the help of a talking cat named Binx

Themes:

Witchcraft, siblings, virginity, young love, youth, history, Halloween, black cats, failing, unfaithfulness, cheating, costumes, self sacrifice, love, friendship, zombies, parties, spells, hexs, magic, flying brooms, resurrection, and fun song and dance numbers.

Language:

Some of the words I heard: d-mn twice and hell four times. There are a couple of religious exclamations and the word heck is used. One witch mentions that she has been to Hell and found it a lovely place.

There is also name calling and witch like banter. Some examples of this are jerk, zit face, collect your candy and get out of my life, airhead, hags, moron, buffoon, wench, bring the little brats to die, ugliest things that ever lived.

Stuff to be aware of:

The witch’s book of spells is said to be made of human flesh and given to the Sanderson sisters by Satan. The book also has an eye on it that moves and appears to be stitched together. The witches take the life force of children to stay young. One child at the beginning of the film dies this way. The Sanderson sisters get hung at the beginning of the movie. You see them with nooses around their necks, but during the hanging only their feet are seen dangling. A bully asks another kid if he has some “hash” to smoke. The witches get burnt up in a pottery oven, but nothing gruesome is seen.

There is a zombie in the movie. His backstory is told in which he cheated on one of the witches with another one and got his mouth sewed shut with a dull needle. His first lover then kills him. The zombie cuts his mouth open with a pocket knife. He gets his head knocked off several times and it can be seen rolling away. He also gets his fingers mashed off by a car running over a manhole he is coming out of. There is a cat that is immortal and gets ran over and comes back to life.

There are also a few sexual things and induenos. One of the witches mentions hanging a boy on a hook and playing with him. There is multiple references to a character being a virgin and jokes are made about it. A guy hugs a pillow and says, “Oh, Allison you’re so soft, I just want to…” One of the witches tells a bus driver that they desire children. His response is, “it might take me a couple of tries.” One of the witches sits on his lap and he flirts with her. There is a mother in the movie that dresses as Madonna for Halloween complete with pointy bra. Max’s little sister mentions to another girl that her brother likes her “yaboos.”

Overall:

This is a classic Halloween movie. It is humorous and the cast seem to really have fun making it. I have enjoyed watching this one over and over again. One complaint I have is how the main character is looked down upon and picked on throughout the movie for being a virgin. He should be praised. There was also more sexual stuff in this than I had remembered.
