Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes
Mostly listened to this while driving. Micheal Page, who reads it on Audible, does great voice work.
Peter Nimble is a blind thief with no family. After meeting a traveling salesman he steals something that changes his life, a box with three sets of fantastic and magical eyes. His new found treasure leads him to meet amazing and magical people/animals/beasts and sends him on an adventure to find a lost kingdom. This whimsical tale has thieves cant lingo, clockwork contraptions, and even a dogfish.
Reading Audience:
I would say about 5th grade and up. Maybe younger if you kid can handle things like Indiana Jones and Marvel movies.
Stuff to be aware of:
There is some name calling and the word “bloody” is used a few times. Some of the characters get hurt, stabbed, clawed, and a few meet their end. *Turn back now if you don’t want any spoilers*
One character is blind because a raven poked his eyes out, children are slaves and mistreated, and a few characters die in peculiar ways. The deaths are nor really gruesome or explicit. One death involves ravens ascending on a guy, him yelling, and then he is gone. Blood is mentioned a few times during battles.
Overall:
The book starts out feeling like Oliver Twist, but once magic arrives on the scene it starts feeling more like Stardust (but without the sexual aspects Stardust has). It wasn’t my favorite of Auxier’s books, but I did really enjoy it. It starts a little slow, but once it gets going it doesn’t stop. By the end I loved several of the characters and I am looking forward to reading the sequel. Also, it’s neat that some characters and places from this are also in his elementary school book series, The Fabled Stables.
