The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic
When Persimmony Smudge, a ten year old girl, mistakenly over hears a secret plan it will send her on an adventure to save her kingdom. After being joined by Worvil, who worries about everything, she will be led on a journey that will have her trying to convince two kingdoms of an unbelievable truth and how they are better off being friends than enemies. Told in a flowery and whimsical way Persimmony’s journey is full of humor, fun, and heart.
Reading Audience:
This book series is advertised for eight to twelve year olds. Depending on how well your eight or nine year old can read they might run across some harder words. Older students shouldn’t have any problems. This is a good read aloud with your family book.
Stuff to be aware of:
There are some flowery insults in the book like such as: dolt, thoughtless, heathen, disobedient imp, etc. There are some sad/hurtful things said, but they are done in humorous ways. Some examples of this are “hanged until he is thoroughly dead” and a character’s birthday candles burning his house down and he was the lone survivor in his family. One man with a cold is told he will get his nose cut off. Things like that. Nothing scary, no fighting (besides arguments), and no bad language.
Overall:
When I reviewed Trafton’s book Henry and the Chalk Dragon I said, it reminds me of Roald Dahl books (Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, etc.). This one does as well. You’ll have fun reading this one and it will be hard not to smile. The writing is fanciful, with a lot of wit, but also very elegant. It is very whimsical. It is a children’s book, adults can enjoy it, but may not.
