The Wingfeather Saga - Season 2

Stream on Angel Studios

Episode: 7 twenty five to thirty two minute Episodes

Not Rated (but clean)

Season two picks up right where season one left off. Our heroes are staying at Pete’s Treehouse, hiding from the Fangs. As has become evident now, trouble always follows the Wingfeathers. This puts them on the run to the Ice Prairies, but before they can get there run-ins with the Stranders, old flames, dagger fish, fork factories, and trolls will get in their way. Join Janner, Kalmar, Leeli, Podo, Nia, Peet, and brave Nugget as they journey through Strander territory and Dugtown in a season that follows the first half of the second book North or Be Eaten.

Stuff to be aware of:

Scariness - The fangs return, but aren’t any scarier than the last season.  There is a giant beast in episode one that resembles a mixture of an alien and an insect.  There are trolls in this season and they kind of look like rocky ogres.  A scary sea dragon face can be seen in the water in episode two.  Drowning is briefly mentioned.  In episode five there is a group of people that are made to look creepy, kind of like zombies, but they are actually just malnourished, dirty citizens.  They chase one of the boys and capture him.  There is a factory that makes weapons with child labor.  The children are overworked and abused.  If they act up they are put in solitary confinement in a metal box.  Humans are shown turning into Fangs, (but it isn’t very graphic) and this could be scary to younger viewers.  The humans go in a box, sing, and come out changed into Fangs.

Violence/Gore - Dagger fish jump out of a stream and stick into trolls, but there is no blood.  A Fang gets impaled by a thrown spear and falls off a cliff in episode two, but there is no blood.  Many fangs are shot with arrows and killed, but not in a gory way.  Also, in episode two, a troll gets a sword to the heart, and dies, but again there is no blood.

*Spoiler Alert* Nugget goes over the waterfall protecting the Wingfeathers, which could upset young viewers.  We get to see the sea dragons bury him at sea.  In episode three the Stranders make lots of threats about killing the Wingfeathers.  In episode four a boy is tied up and drug by his hair.  He is also punched in the stomach.  Later, in episode six he gets beat up and kicked.  He ends up with a black eye and bruises.

Other - Podo gets a long kiss from a woman.  Podo smokes a pipe.

Overall:

I am thrilled that Angel Studios has decided to split the second book into two seasons. They still can’t get everything from the book in, but only dealing with half of North or Be Eaten allows the creators to follow along closer to the book.

In the second season, the animation has gotten even more refined and looks great. The voice acting continues to be top notch and the characters continue to grow and develop in this season. The writers, with the help of the book’s author, continue to do well trying to capture everything in the book and turn it into bite sized pieces for the episodic formula. I think the second season is even better than the first, only because the artists are getting in the groove and everything doesn’t feel as rushed.

If you aren’t watching this (or reading the books) you need to!
