Stuff to be aware of:
Gore: There are deaths and executions. Most, if not all, of them involve blood. There isn’t an abundance of blood seen, but there is some. The more gruesome deaths are not shown on screen. There is one scene where someone is killed offscreen and blood sprays on the deck and has some chunks in it. One kid stabs himself in the face with a small knife to prove he is tough. There is a man sliced in half and another who gets his arm cut off. When people lose limbs or are stabbed there is always blood on their clothes after, but the severing of the limbs aren’t seen. During a sword fight a man is left with a very bad cut on his chest which is later shown being sewed up. There is a man who gets his arm bitten off by a sea monster. This is not seen, but a bloody spot on his shirt where he arm was is the aftermath.
A stranded man eats his own leg. This isn’t seen, but it is talked about and some blood is shown. A mother gets shot in front of her children, but no blood is seen. A girl stabs herself in the arm multiple times and blood trickles down. A young girl is given a tattoo and she screams. This scene doesn’t last long. A shark man gets his teeth knocked out and they grow back with some blood.
Sexual: In the first episode there is a naked man admiring himself in the mirror. His butt is briefly seen, and he covers his frontal privates with a stuffed animal. The rest of his body is seen.
Scary Stuff: There is a clown pirate whose head, arms, and legs can detach from his body and float around. There is a sea monster that looks like a giant eel and bites off a man’s arm. There is a race of fish men, while not scary they are kind of gross looking.
Other: There is drinking in multiple scenes. Someone flips another person off.
Overall:
I have not read the Manga or see the anime show that has over twenty seasons, so I cannot comment on how accurate this rendition is. My brother, who watched the anime, mentioned that he thought it was a good adaptation. The actor that plays main character, Monkey D Luffy, seems perfect for the role. He plays the character with great energy, innocence, and quirkiness and his positivity even made me feel I could achieve my wildest dreams.
The story and characters are all quirky. The main characters all have fleshed out backstories and goals that come out in everything they do, say, and how they react to situations that arise. There are just enough episodes to tell a beginning adventure story, flesh out the characters, show their faults, and leave enough left undone to make viewers want more.
I had a lot of fun watching this, and looked forward to turning it on each night to see the next episode. At the end of the season I wanted more!
I would guess with it being an anime, and about pirates, there may be children that might want to watch it. I would say be aware of the gore and language. I want to warn you though, if you watch it you may take up sailing and start an adventure to find the one piece and become King of the Pirates.
