Deadpool and Wolverine
Deadpool is picked up by the Time Variance Authority (yeah the sacred timeline cops from Loki) because his universe’s timeline is about to end. The TVA offers Deadpool a chance to join the MCU (earth 616), but also that his timeline will end rather quickly. However, when he finds out Logan might be able to help save his home timeline he goes Rogue and ends up on a whirlwind, timeline-spanning adventure with the mutant who is the best there is as what he does.
One thing to note - watching Loki Seasons 1 and 2 would be good before you watch this, but is not necessary.
Themes:
Superheroes, team ups, Thor, the multiverse, the Time Variance Authority, The Avengers, Fox, mutants, regeneration, the Void, saving people, becoming a hero, losing everything, drinking, time travel, timelines, moral flexibility, friends, Blind Al, Disney, he Marvel Cinematic Universe, fighting, costumes, and all things Marvel.
Language: (My counts might be off a little. The words fly hard and fast. I did not count the curse words in the end credits scene.)
A*s - 8 B*tch- 4 D*ck - 4 D*mn - 14 F*ck - 112 Hell - 3 Sh*t - 33 Religious Exclamations - 25
There are a bunch of sexual words that I will mention below, but also the words sucks and prick are used.
Stuff to be aware of: (I was not able to write down everything in the theater so I will give a high view of it all)
Drugs - There is a scene in which multiple nicknames for cocaine are mentioned. There are several jokes about cocaine made during the film. There are jokes made that cocaine can be mentioned, but not seen in the movie because it is Disney owned.
LGBTQ - There are a couple of flippant jokes made about character’s pronouns (Him/She/They). There is one male character that seems attracted to other male characters. He ogles over tight superhero clothes and stars at Hugh Jackman’s abs. This is played for humor. The character Negasonic Teenage Warhead is in the movie briefly with her girlfriend. They are seen together, but do not share any intimate moments.
Religion - There is a comment made about God being a she. There are a few jokes made about God. Deadpool refers to himself as the MCU messiah or Marvel Jesus multiple times.
Sexual Jokes - I could not keep up with all the sexual jokes in the movie, but I tried to write down all the themes of the jokes. There are jokes dealing with being soaking wet in the groin, not getting much vaginal sex, male masterbation, female masterbation, erections, arousal, seman, blow jobs, g-spots, and pegging. There are multiple scenes with Deadpool’s crotch and buttocks being groped/spanked and making funny noises. Multiple people get stabbed in the groin and buttocks. In one scene Deadpool’s swords are stuck in one man’s buttocks and in another man’s groin and he pulls them back and forth in a sexual way. It is mentioned that one character is married to a stripper. This is a very high view of the jokes in the movie. There are a lot, but these are the themes the jokes usually deal with.
Violence/Gore - This movie is by far the bloodiest and goriest MCU movie. A skeleton is dismantled and the parts are used to kill multiple people. People get stabbed in the chest, through the head, in the groin, in the butt, and everywhere else imaginable. There is lots of blood. One character cuts off another’s head and holds the severed head up. People explode and gross stuff goes everywhere. On character moves her fingers, hands, and arms through people’s bodies. Her fingers can be seen probing character’s heads underneath the skin and poke out in spots. Her fingers also come out the other side of peoples faces and heads. This is meant to be disturbing. One person gets shot multiple times and their head explodes.
Other - Logan drinks multiple times during the films. There are a few scenes with characters drinking and smoking.
Overall:
Yes, this movie really does connect to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The sexual jokes may be toned down just a notch, but I can’t compare. I watched all the Fox X-Men movies, except for the two Deadpool ones due to the language and sexual jokes. As you can see above, this MCU movie is not for the family. If you expected the MCU to tone it down a bit, it might tone down the sexual jokes slightly, but it is still what you would expect from Deadpool. It is vulgar, bloody, and I almost quit counting the f-word because it was said so many times.
BUT, what are my thoughts you ask? No need to break the fourth wall, I’ll give them to you now.
The story, itself, is nothing to write home about and the idea of Deadpool’s world coming to an end is constantly forgotten about until someone brings it up or a photo of his friends is brought out. If Wolverine and Deadpool were not in this story by it likely would not stand well. I also feel like a big deal was made about this movie having a huge impact on the MCU, and spoiler alert, I am not sure it really does.
Another thing, is that some of the characters’ motivation’s (like the villain) are a bit confusing or make no sense at all. The chronological order of events from other movies gets a bit confusing if you think about it all too heard. I guess this movie isn’t meant to fully make sense, much like Deadpool.
That’s the bad. Here’s the good. This movie has plenty of humor that hits right and Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynold’s chemistry is perfect. Jackman’s grumpy, fed upp Logan and Reynold’s never “stop talking merc” are the perfect yin and yang, but the best part is the self awareness. This movie makes fun of the MCU, has ton ofwell-playedd cameos, and at times feels like it is paying homage to all the Fox superhero movies that led up to giving us the MCU. Through all the jokes, it feels like Marvel is giving the Fox X-Men movies a nice send off. They also do a great job balancing the sacredness of Logan dying heroically in his last movie, but also make jokes about the good, the bad, and the stupid of the current marvel movies and superhero culture.
Last few things, this movie has a KILLER soundtrack and there is an end credit scene. The end credits scene is not really impactful on the movie or the larger MCU, but it will likely make many people laugh with vulgar humor.
My thoughts as a Christian, parent, minister…
I likely won’t watch this one again. It was too much for me. I like to keep up with the MCU which gave me reason to want to see this movie, but I hoped Disney and Marvel would tone down the sexual jokes and cursing some. They may have toned it down a little, but not much. I hate this, and if the theater I was in is any evidence this movie will make a lot of money. I hope Marvel and Disney don’t decide to push more R-rated movies in the MCU. Comic books were designed for kids, can we have some safer movies so I don’t feel bad buying a super hero toy for my nephews?
