Millie Maven and the Golden Vial
Millie Maven is now a full time student at F.I.G.S. Even though she has yet to discover her gift. With her special medallion the Great Teacher gave her she quickly learns that it may further drive a wedge between her and the more popular students. After a few weeks of learning at F.I.G.S. Millie and her classmates are sent on their next trail to retrieve a special golden vial. This trail will test their ability to work together as a team, as well as standing friendships.
Millie will learn more about her new school and it’s history, and gifts will be explained more in depth. Millie must also learn that all gifts are important, equal in value, and when used together as a team more things can be accomplished.
Reading Audience:
Middle School is the aim with this series, but older students and adults may enjoy it.
Stuff to be aware of:
History of the Great teacher is referenced multiple time. The Great Teacher was killed by the students He loved and his life was a sacrifice to save them all (sound familiar?). There is a group of bullies and insults fly as well as phrases like, “we kick her butt” and “You psycho!” The words, “what the…” are said twice, but the rest of the sentence is never mentioned.
There is a passing comment about failed pregnancies. Themes of abandonment and feeling alone are a big part of the story in this line. There is also something the students eat which they get addicted to. Phrases like “tripping” and “get my fix” are used to discuss this addiction that causes one to do nothing but crave the substance.
Overall:
I enjoyed the first part of the book more than the second part. The first part feels a bit like of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngers and Hogwarts. The second part of the book is about a new trial the students must face. It was okay, but it gets a little weird. There are some great themes about love casting out fear, how all people are valuable, and not judging others. I love this quote from the book, “The Great Teachers doesn’t call us to judge, He calls us to love.”
I think part of my problem, was it took us the whole first book to get accepted into F. I. G. S. and only the fist part of this book is about he school. From the beginning of book one to the end of book two only a few weeks have passed. Some of the relationships develop quickly and I felt it moved a bit fast.
I still enjoyed this one, and I am excited to finish the trilogy. I guess wishing for more is a good thing.
Also, if you are a Ted Dekkar reader you will notice a certain book from his other book series show up. He likes to tie his worlds together. You do not have to read his other works though to enjoy the story.
