I Found a Circus Tent in the Woods Behind My House
While walking in the woods behind their house Dave and his four year old son, Jacob, stumble on a red and yellow circus tent. What follows next is a nightmare of Barnum and Bailey sized horror. Will Dave and his son be able to escape or will they be forced to put on a show for the unnatural denizens of the tent?
Reading Audience:
The language and horror of this book suggests adults, but high schoolers could handle it.
Stuff to be aware of:
This is a horror story so be prepared for creepy circus performers, shadow creatures, and spooky settings. There is bleeding, but nothing overly grotesque and there is a part of the book where the main character sees seven corpses of what he believes is old naked man hanging from nooses. There is a bit of language in this short story. I counted hell about eight times, d-mn about twice, a-s twice, piss once, sh-t once, the f-word eight times and a couple of religious exclamations.
Overall:
I enjoy a good scary story and this one is well written and frightening. My wife came up behind me while I was reading it and made me jump. She wasn’t trying to be scary, she was just talking to me. I think this being a tale of a father protecting his son adds a layer of suspense to it.
The author sets up some scenes and conversations throughout this short story that pays off in the end by coming full circle. It doesn’t take long to read through and I found myself at the end looking back to earlier pages and chapters thinking through and linking things. There isn’t anything sexual or graphic in the story so I was let down by the amount of language. Outside of the cursing this is a short, fun October read. It is also fairly inexpensive. I will be reading some more of Mr. Farthing’s writings.
