Books All Parents Should Read
Here I am curating a list of books that I have read that have to do with parenting, marriage, social media, the Bible, etc. My hope is that this list will be full of tools to help us become better parents, mentors, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and Christians.
5 Love Languages
At this point in time most people have heard about Gary Chapman’s Five Love Languages. This book takes the original languages and translates them into the dialect of children. Applying the love languages to your spouse can be so rewarding and fulfilling. Applying the principles to your children can be just as rewarding and fulfilling as with your spouse. If you haven’t read the original check it out first.
Phones, Social Media, and Children
Personally, I am not aware of any study that shows positive results regarding children/teens having unlimited access to social media. Haidt doesn’t just show the negative data about the impact of phones and social media on children and teens, he shows you why and how to fix the issue.
Play and Self Teaching
I discovered this book in 2024 during a homeschool convention. While the author does have a home school slant to his writing there is so much more here. This book reminds us about the importance of free play; how children teach one another; how children learn by being involved in the process of what they are learning; and how we parents are supervising our children a bit too much. If you plan to homeschool you should read this one, if you don’t plan to homeschool you should still read this one.
Transgenderism
This is an alarming book that reveals the current world of adolescents, where we are starting to see transgenderism begin to trend. Shrier does not profess to be a Christian and she is not against adults making transitioning decisions, but she will open up your eyes to the dangers this trend can have on children and teens.
Teaching Children
Okay, hear me out on this one. This book is designed to help become a better Sunday school teacher, however, there is so much here that can help you teach your child. The author does a great job teaching the importance of connecting Jesus to every page of the Bible, but also how to better teach the Gospel to children. Let’s face it, our children need Jesus as home. They will learn Him even better when taught at home and at church.
Marriage and Your Children
While this book is designed to help you and your spouse “choose” to have a better marriage, one of Glasser’s lessons is to talk to your children about your marriage. This book can help you be make choices that will lead to a healthy and happy marriage which will in turn help you live out a good example to your children. The best part is its only about 100 pages long. Yeah, its short but packs a big punch.
